This week we took our first step toward our “Summer Electric Plan.” I mentioned this in our “Theme Week” post. For those who may have missed that post it consists of using cooking methods less prone to heat up the house. These methods include grilling, using a crock pot or slow cooker, making quick stove top dishes, and microwaving.
We do use natural gas for our main cooking appliances and you would think that would be ideal for saving electricity. However, you may notice that some of the cooking methods in our “Summer Electric Plan” actually use electricity. That may seem odd. However, it makes sense when you realize how much it costs to Air Condition a house. An oven or cook top heats up the house considerably. Compare that to a crock pot or microwave and it is easy to see why we are making the shift to use them, for the summer anyway.
Since we are just getting into the swing of things we still had a couple oven cooked meals. But over all we made great strides in adjusting our menu to try and save electricity. The breakdown looks like this
Oven cooked dishes
Green Chile Frittata (left overs) and Naan Pizza
Crock pot dishes
Apple Pork Roast and Crocked Orange Chicken
Quick stove top dishes
Shredded Pork Tacos and Fried Green Peas
Microwave dishes
No cook dishes
Mango Salsa , tossed salad, and Avocado Slices
